STAR OF STAGE AND VIDEO TAKES ON DIRECTOR'S ROLE

Star of stage and video takes on director's role.

CARMARTHEN Youth Opera has announced it has appointed a new director.

The Youth Opera opens a new chapter in its 33-year history with the appointment of Steve Elias — an actor and choreographer who has enjoyed success on the West End for the past decade.

Steve, a native of Carmarthen and a former member of the youth opera, returns to the fold.

Youth opera chairman Mike Rogers said: "We are thrilled with Steve's appointment as he has considerable professional experience within the theatre.

"He moved to London to train and work and has a highly successful career working in the West End on such shows as Billy Elliot, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Guys and Dolls as well as many others.

"His recent work was as the choreographer for the Scottish National Opera's production of Pirates of Penzance."

As well as stage productions, Steve has starred in an MTV-award winning video for Since I Left You by the Avalanches.

In 2007, he starred alongside the late Patrick Swayze in Guys and Dolls.

As well as welcoming Steve back, the Youth Opera waves a fond farewell to director of nine years, Adrian Rowlands, who has made a significant contribution to the high standards set. Adrian, who is a chartered architect retired from the company this summer to take up a commission for a major design project.

The youth opera is keeping tight-lipped over it's next production, but is due to hold auditions for the February show next week.

Auditions for the They are scheduled to take place at Myrddin Primary School, Carmarthen, on Saturday and Sunday, September 14 and 15.

Everyone up to the age of 21 years of age are welcome to audition. Details of the show will be revealed in next week's Journal.
