What's in a name?

When we decided that we needed a logo for the company, previously known as "Carmarthen and District Youth Opera, we began with the constants throughout the Company’s history - “Carmarthen” and “Youth Opera” and since we have always been affectionately referred to as the “Youth Opera” we wanted something to reflect that. We also wanted to create something visually exciting to reflect the vibrant youngsters who make up the cast and something they would be very proud to wear. When drawing up various ideas it was noticed that the initials of Youth Opera were YO which is also a word used today as an exclamation to get someone’s attention, to express excitement, or to greet someone. Suddenly there was only one option. So this year sees the launch of our brand new logo – keep an eye out for it!

2010 will see the Carmarthen Youth Opera celebrating its 30th Anniversary – thirty wonderful years of providing a cast of youngsters with a unique opportunity to discover and develop their talents – at the same time delighting the successive audiences that have packed St Peter’s Civic Hall and subsequently The Lyric Theatre. The company is indeed focused on the youth of the county, the maximum age normally just 21 – the youngest performer - one of the King of Siam’s children - at less than six months old!  The emphasis still follows Elizabeth Evan’s legacy – to discover, nurture and develop the stars of stage, screen and backstage of the future.

The Youth Opera is now gearing up for the next major annual production for 2009, with auditions for “South Pacific” being held in September. This colourful musical will take place between 16th and 21st  February 2009 at the Lyric Theatre, Carmarthen. Given the benchmark of excellence expected of the cast, this is yet another performance not to be missed!
