Synopsis:Lionel Bart's musical and dramatic treatment of "Oliver Twist", with its haunting score, has been described as a very free adaptation of Charles Dickens' original story, yet it is surprisingly loyal to the great author's work.As the story of Oliver's adventure begins, we see him with the workhouse boys singing "Food Glorious Food". Oliver, by asking for more, arouses the wrath of Mr Bumble, the Beadle and Mrs Corney. They decide that he "Must Go" and sell him to the Undertaker, Mr Sowerberry, for £5. From there he runs away to London and meets the Artful Dodger who takes him to see Fagin and his gang of urchin pickpockets in the thieves' kitchen. While a member of Fagin's gang he meets Nancy, who, with her boyfriend Bill Sykes, provide the anguish and drama of the story. Oliver is sent out with the urchins and is wrongly accused of picking the pocket of a gentleman, Mr Brownlow, who, to make amends to Oliver, takes him into his own home. He also discovers how much Oliver looks like the portrait of his long lost daughter, Agnes. Could it be that Oliver is his grandson? Meanwhile, the despicable Bill Sykes sends Nancy to bring Oliver back into Fagin's fold. Thisshe does but has a change of heart and decides to help Oliver return to the good life of Mr Brownlow's home. In doing this she infuriates the wicked Sykes ... with tragic consequences. All, of course, ends well as the show draws to a close with Oliver heading for good fortune and our shameless, loveable rogue, Fagin, examining his conscience. |
